Anaina Hou - Trivia Night

Friday, February 14th

Live music by Melvin Seals & JGB, featuring John Kadlecik. From their website:

“Melvin Seals has been a powerful presence in the music industry for over 30 years with a long-established reputation as a performer, recording artist and producer. Melvin is most revered for his powerful, high-spirited, Hammond B-3 organ, and keyboards in the Jerry Garcia Band. Melvin spun his B-3 magic with the Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years and in doing so helped pioneer and define what has now become “Jam Band Music”. From blues to funk to rock to jazz, Melvin Seals serves up a tasty mix with a little R&B and gospel thrown in to spice things up.

Melvin and JGB brings an intuitive, expressive style, soul, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. With acoustic and electric ingredients and unique combinations of Dave Hebert’s guitar and vocals, Pete Lavezzoli’s hearty drums and, of course, a heapin’ helpin’ of the wizard’s magic on Hammond B-3 Organ and keyboards. Along with backing vocals, the result is a most satisfying blend of natural organic grooves that challenges genre boundaries. Their chemistry is the focus from which they create a spontaneous and high art where the sky is the limit musically. They offer an exciting, often psychedelic musical journey that changes nightly and keeps the audience dancing and smiling (and some staring in amazement) for hours.

In addition to the often played staples, the band has recently been exploring the back catalog and performing a ton of super rare tunes, some of which The Jerry Garcia Band played only a few times over all those years.
Adding his rock-gospel-soul-rhythm and blues touch with his funky style of playing, no wonder Jerry nicknamed him “Master of the Universe”. Melvin continues to treat music lovers to his unique brand of melodic flavor with JGB. Come see and hear for yourself!”

Doors open at 6:00, Music starts at 7:00. Food trucks available.

Tickets are $39 for the first 100 sold; then $45. Buy tickets here.

Anaina Hou Brings Live Music and Trivia to the North Shore – Kauai

Anaina Hou - Live Music

A big Mahalo to Anaina Hou who is now bringing live music, trivia and lots of social gatherings to the north shore of Kauai! You may not recognize the name, but Anaina Hou is the community center that features a mini-golf surrounded by a botanical garden in Kilauea. It is also known as the starting point for the Wai Koa Loop trail, a fire show every Wednesday night, and one of the best playgrounds on the island. The Farmers Market on Saturday morning offers some of the freshest local produce, flowers and homemade products. And, there is talk of a craft fair to be held at the same time.

Kauai Mini Golf & Botanical Gardens

But, what many north shore residents are most excited about are the events that have been happening at the Porter Pavilion; a beautiful, newly built, large room with a stage, that is a perfect venue for movies and live music. Pau Hana Fridays have become very popular. At least one Friday a month a musical group from around the island or abroad is brought in to perform. Food trucks offer ono (delicious) food and concessions are sold. Happy Hour runs from 5:00 to 7:00 with music from 6:00 to 9:00. Keiki (children) are welcome so it makes for a great opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. There is seating inside the pavilion or on a large grassy area which can be used to picnic. It is quite the social gathering and guess what – it’s free!

Movie Night at Anaina Hou – Kilauea – Kauai – Hawaii

Movie Night at Anaina Hou - Kauai

It is going to be a fun night this Saturday, January 12th, 2019 at the Anaina Hou Porter Pavilion. Two movies will be projected onto the big screen: Incredibles 2 and Crazy Rich Asians! The best part is that Movie Night is FREE!

The Anaina Hou Porter Pavilion is behind the Mini Golf just outside of Kilauea, a very short drive from Honu Point Vacation Rental. Doors open at 5:00 PM. Dinner and drinks are available for purchase. Go early for good seats: there is limited seating in the Pavilion. Overflow is on the lawn. Due to the liquor license, no outside food or beverage is allowed, including water bottles.

If you are willing to set up or break down chairs, come anytime on movie day, 10:00 to noon OR at 4:00 PM to set up, and help after the last movie. As a volunteer, you get first pick of the seats and free popcorn. To volunteer, email maile@anainahou.org.

Movie Night Movies:

Incredibles 2

Everyone’s favorite family of superheroes is back in “Incredibles 2” – but this time Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is in the spotlight, leaving Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell) and Dash (voice of Huck Milner) to navigate the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life. It’s a tough transistion for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack’s emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) must find a way to work together again—which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible.

Crazy Rich Asians

Rachel Chu is happy to accompany her longtime boyfriend, Nick, to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. She’s also surprised to learn that Nick’s family is extremely wealthy and he’s considered one of the country’s most eligible bachelors. Thrust into the spotlight, Rachel must now contend with jealous socialites, quirky relatives and something far, far worse — Nick’s disapproving mother.

So, go to one movie or go to both. Either way you are sure to have a good time.

Anaina Hou is a nonprofit and relies on volunteers to enhance services to the community. Check out the new playground and Farmers’ Markets on Monday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon and Saturday morning.
