Anaina Hou - Trivia Night

Friday, February 14th

Live music by Melvin Seals & JGB, featuring John Kadlecik. From their website:

“Melvin Seals has been a powerful presence in the music industry for over 30 years with a long-established reputation as a performer, recording artist and producer. Melvin is most revered for his powerful, high-spirited, Hammond B-3 organ, and keyboards in the Jerry Garcia Band. Melvin spun his B-3 magic with the Jerry Garcia Band for 18 years and in doing so helped pioneer and define what has now become “Jam Band Music”. From blues to funk to rock to jazz, Melvin Seals serves up a tasty mix with a little R&B and gospel thrown in to spice things up.

Melvin and JGB brings an intuitive, expressive style, soul, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. With acoustic and electric ingredients and unique combinations of Dave Hebert’s guitar and vocals, Pete Lavezzoli’s hearty drums and, of course, a heapin’ helpin’ of the wizard’s magic on Hammond B-3 Organ and keyboards. Along with backing vocals, the result is a most satisfying blend of natural organic grooves that challenges genre boundaries. Their chemistry is the focus from which they create a spontaneous and high art where the sky is the limit musically. They offer an exciting, often psychedelic musical journey that changes nightly and keeps the audience dancing and smiling (and some staring in amazement) for hours.

In addition to the often played staples, the band has recently been exploring the back catalog and performing a ton of super rare tunes, some of which The Jerry Garcia Band played only a few times over all those years.
Adding his rock-gospel-soul-rhythm and blues touch with his funky style of playing, no wonder Jerry nicknamed him “Master of the Universe”. Melvin continues to treat music lovers to his unique brand of melodic flavor with JGB. Come see and hear for yourself!”

Doors open at 6:00, Music starts at 7:00. Food trucks available.

Tickets are $39 for the first 100 sold; then $45. Buy tickets here.

What To Do In Kauai – Pickleball – Kilauea

Pickleball on Kauai

Join us for Pickleball In Paradise!  Pickleball is a very popular racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Two to four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a wiffle ball, over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, and a net and rules similar to tennis, with a few modifications. Pickleball was invented in the mid 1960s as a children’s backyard pastime but has become popular among “adults” as well.

We have a growing number of players on the North Shore who welcome visitors to play with them. Tom and I play at least once a week. There are racquets and balls available for you to use. Three indoor courts accommodate beginners, social players, and competitive players. No need to sign up. Just arrive at the Kilauea Gym on Keneke Street (an 8 minute drive from Honu Point) at 9:00 for beginners/social players and 11:00 for competitive players on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Or, at 9:00 on Sundays for beginners and 12:00 on Sundays for competitive players.

When the Kilauea courts are unavailable, many players set up nets at the three outdoor courts on Emmalani Drive in Princeville. For more information contact Ted at northshorepickleballohana@googlegroups.com.  Our goal is to HAVE FUN!

Princeville Night Market On The North Shore Of Kauai!

Princeville Night Market

If you are lucky enough to be on the North Shore of Kauai on the second Sunday of the month, you are in for a treat. Local venders bring their island-made items and set up tents to sell directly to you at the Princeville Night Market.

On the second Sunday of each month find handmade jewelry, soaps, clothing and much more in and around the Princeville Shopping Center (just a couple of minutes from Honu Point). The event is from 4:00 to 8:00 with food available for purchase and live music.

Princeville Night Market 2

My favorite booth is operated by a friend who makes the most beautiful jewelry. Her name is Veronica Groepler and she’s usually placed close to the Wine Market at one end of the Center. Her designs are creative and priced right.  She also has a studio in Hanapepe at 3801 Hanapepe Road.  So if you don’t make the market and happen to be in Hanapepe, check out her jewels there.

Veronica's Jewelry

This event is a chance to mingle with the locals and buy some products you might not be able to get in our stores.  Great for those gifts you need to bring home to friends and family. Or, just take in the environment and listen to the music. Either way it’s a fun and relaxing way to enjoy an evening in Paradise.

Best Fish Tacos On Kauai At Kilauea Fish Market

Best Fish Tacos on Kauai

If you are looking for healthy local-style food with fresh ingrediants you’ll find the best grilled mahi mahi tacos on Kauai at Kilauea Fish Market.  The owners opened their doors in 2004 out of a desire to support local fishermen and farmers and to bring a local fish market to the community of Kilauea. They continue to do just that with great menu choices and delicious flavors. It is one of my favorite spots for lunch.

Besides tacos, the menu includes salads (try the Seared Ahi Poke Salad), wraps, and plates full of fish, tofu, chicken, pork and Korean barbeque. The ahi/organic tofu wrap was one of the first items to go on the menu and is still the number one seller. Many of the sauces and sides are made from scratch including the creamy oriental dressing, the potato mac salad, and the fresh salsa as examples. Menu items can be adjusted for Gluten free diets. Locally caught fish, hormone-free beef and marinaded meats can be bought by the pound.  Freshly made poke, cucumber kim-chee, Kilauea greens, fresh homemade salsa and more are available for purchase.
